BS 8878:2010 Web Accessibility Code of Practice Draft ProposalsThe latest draft proposal for Web Accessibility has been released. This has been based on PAS 78:2006, Guide to good practice in commissioning accessible websites. The proposals are applicable to private and public organisations including government, local councils, and academic institutions. It suggests that responsibility for following the policy could fall within the scope of the HR or Marketing department as well as those responsible for the organisations website and web applications. The draft states that there are many reasons for organisations to take the following steps to ensure web access and usability to all.
To help organisations follow the policy recommendations, it is suggested that a strategy for web accessibility is put into place. By embedding this policy whenever a web product or service is delivered it will be ensure that all objectives are met. Each department should consider the impact of the purpose of the product and its audeince, and ensure regular consultation with disabled people to allow accessibility to be kept up to date. The general public can give their comments on this proposal by visiting http://drafts.bsigroup.com/.
